Ashley Hope Pérez will discuss her recent book, "Banned Together: Our Fight for Readers' Rights," and how censorship impacts literacy and education. Age 12 and up.

She will discuss the value of adopting a pro-literacy orientation to support young people today. The discussion will be moderated by MCPL staff with a book signing to follow. Books for purchase will be provided by Redbud Books.

Ashley Hope Pérez is the author of several novels for young adults and the editor of the recent anthology, Banned Together: Our Fight for Readers' Rights, which received five-starred reviews and was named a best book of the year by Kirkus Reviews and School Library Journal. Her 2015 novel, Out of Darkness, has become one of the most frequently banned books in the U.S. despite never being challenged before 2021. Pérez holds a PhD in comparative literature from Indiana University Bloomington and is an associate professor at The Ohio State University where she directs the Unite to Read Project.

This program is in partnership with the Indiana University Department of Germanic Studies, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Department of Comparative Literature, and the Latino Studies Program.
